What is ESS?

Research with Neutrons

Neutron research plays a decisive role in our understanding of materials features in the world around us. It is for this reason that building the European Spallation Source (ESS), the most advanced neutron research facility in the world, is a prominent part of the recommendations made by the European Strategic Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) with the purpose of advancing European competitiveness. The scientific results produced by ESS will have a significant impact on a remarkably wide diversity of scientific, technological and industrial applications. It will bring along new inventions in areas such as telecommunications, cancer research, biotechnology, pharmacology, environmental technologies, catalysis, energy storage, creation of new materials, energy transmission, transport, data storage, magnetic phenomena and quantum devices

The planned European Spallation Source (ESS) will use the innovative long pulse spallation source concept in order to provide unprecedented research potentials in many of the forefront areas of science and technology.
